Season Wrap-Up

The 2019 Season is a wrap!  I don't post weekly updates on here as in the past, but I will add the season highlights as a final entry.

On the Boys side, running at the Swain Invitational in Duluth was a highlight for the varsity with the weather conditions that made for a very challenging, muddy race. It was the 69th Annual Swain Invite and no one I spoke with has seen anything close to this level of mud, slick and cold combined.  Isaiah Fitzgerald ran first for the Tigers at this grueling meet giving it his all. They also enjoyed a night of much "gaming" in their room.

At the HVL Conference meet our boys took 5th place.. We had 4 All-Conference runners.  They are:  Jake Ratelle, Scott Boelman, Caleb Goff and Isaiah Fitzgerald placing in the top 19 to make All-Conference.  Caleb Goff ran a PB time of 18:00.0 and Isaiah ran a PB time of 18:00.9.  The boys placed 12th, 13th, 17th and 19th respectively.

The Boys and Girls together also won the shoe trophy at the Chatfield meet with the boys and girls times combined.  Always an exciting challenge! Second year in a row Champions!  Well done!

At the Section 1A meet the boys placed 5th out of 22 teams.  Jake Ratelle ran a very strong race and placed 14th in a season best time of 17:42.7 missing State advancement by 1 place!  As a team, the boys ran very strong races with several of them just missing PB or Season Best times!  Well done and way to finish strong boys!

On the Girls side they also enjoyed the Swain Invitational and, while running cautiously, pulled out a 2nd place win out of 30 teams, behind first place Lake City.

It was another season of food trophies for the girls.  At Lake City the girls took first place to win the Apple Pie for the 5th year in a row.
St. Charles, they won the Big Cookie for the 5th year in a row.
Austin was exciting as they were very surprised to beat Lake City by 1 point and took home the donuts!

HVL Conference was a 2nd place finish to Lake City, after 4 years running as Champions.  They ran without varsity teammate Ali Graff and came up short to a tough Lake City team.  The girls top five received All-Conference Honors.  They are Kailee Malone, 5th, Isabel Field, 10th, Gracie Waltman, 13th, Olivia Field, 16th, and Gloria Nelson, 19th.

Section meet had them ranked 2nd going in but, having been there before and not working out, they were elated to get 2nd and advance for the 2nd time in school history to the State Meet as a team!  Kailee Malone and Isabel Field qualified as individual runners as well placing 8th and 12th.  They also received All-State recognition by placing in the top 15 at Sections and having a GPA above 3.75.  Way to go girls!

The girls were ranked 9th in the State going in and that's where they finished.  Kailee Malone improved from a 47th place finish a year ago to 26th, missing All-State Honors by 1 place!  She was first for the Tigers. Her time of 19:40 was one of her best of the season. Isabel Field ran within 2 seconds of her season best time placing 65th and 2nd for the Tigers in 20:13.9. Ali Graff, ran a personal best time of 20:32.8, dropping 7 seconds and placing 89th.  Olivia Field was within 3 seconds of her PB and ran 111th in 20:56.3.  Up next in a time of 21:06.8 (115th) was Gracie Waltman.  Gloria Nelson ran 22:06.3 (156th) and Kaylie Doherty, new to varsity, ran 23:15.5 for 169th as a freshman.

We say goodbye to 4 seniors.  They have contributed so much to the success of this team and our program.  We will deeply miss the contributions and personalities of Kailee, Isabel, Gloria and Gracie.  Best of everything to you in your future pursuits, Ladies!  Tiger CC on 3! ;-)

We have a lot of things to be happy about this season.  Fun with teammates, competition, practices.  There is still work to be done and it is exciting to hear the plans of those that are already thinking ahead to next year and setting goals for their next CC season!  Well done runners!  Have a restful but active off-season and find things to do that bring you joy!

EnJOY the run!!

New Season Underway!

The 2019 CC season is underway with our first meet now complete.  The boys and girls came out looking strong and showed what good summer training can do for you.  We need to be consistent in our efforts now throughout the season.  It was great to see the girls claim 2nd; only 4 points out of first and our boys claim 4th; only 4 points out of 2nd!  Great efforts all around!  Well done runners!  Thanks to Mr. G. for once again creating an A-1 meet for us to enjoy on the home course!  Also, shoutout to the Boosters that helped at concessions, t-shirt sales and working the finish line to make it all happen!

Once again, you may check the results on this blog as I will upload them for each meet this season.  They are easy to find at wayzataresults.com most meets, but there are occasional meets that do not use this site.

Here's to a great season!  Go Tigers!

2018 Banquet Wrap-Up

Thanks to everyone who helped make this another GREAT season of Tiger CC!  I love the plans and dedication to staying active that many of the runners have committed to.  I also love the friendships that they've cultivated over the season or seasons and appreciate how many stay in touch beyond graduation.  We will enjoy hearing from our four graduating seniors, Laura, Alex, Logen and Courtney as opportunities permit!  Thanks for all you have contributed to the Tiger CC Family, you will be missed!

Best wishes on your future and don't forget the joys of running in any capacity!

Coach T.

Footnote:  I forgot to mention Courtney's promo to the student body at the pepfest about the joys of being in CC; a true salesman!  I wish Gracie could have demonstrated for all of us tonight.  Top 10 performance!!  We are all salespeople for our sport!

Until the next run!

2018 Season Begins

We started the 2018 season with our Glomski Invitational.  You can find the results in the link to the right, 2018 Meet Results.  I will continue to add the results there as they happen.  I encourage our veteran runners to go to the meet results from the previous year, listed below right, to compare how they did on the same courses from the previous year.  You can also get a sense of who the competition will be, roughly, this year as well.  Helps you to mentally prep!

The HVL schedule link is to the right for your reference.  I do note a couple discrepancies so I'll check into that; your handout has the complete schedule.

I also added our Denise Austin link under workouts; it's been our classic yoga stretch for years!

Redemption!

Redemption: the action of regaining or gaining possession of something in exchange for payment (our payment was the heartache of 2016!)

Last night the girls team found redemption over last year's near miss and are going to the STATE MEET for the FIRST TIME as a TEAM!! Isaiah Scruggs found redemption over his 2016 season of injury and is RETURNING to the STATE MEET! Shawn Husgen was the only one to PB the course in his final race of his 6-year career by dropping 4 more seconds to 20:42.1. Way to go Shawn! I am so happy for all these fine athletes! Job well done! We have an exciting week ahead to wrap up a very successful 2017 season.

Thanks for all the help from our JV and JH crew that were so helpful in hauling equipment and CHEERING THE TEAMS ON!! It was great to have the whole team, 7-12, together again for this meet and to top it off with supper at Victoria's as a group. Parents, thank you for raising such fine kids, they are a great group, and we CAN take them out in public, with pride! It was a great night!

The results page has been updated with the results from the Section meet. Next Saturday, the boy and girls will run at Northfield, St. Olaf College. Girls run at 1:00 and boy runs at 2:00! I will check into the possibilities of a fan bus with Mr. Malone so stay tuned on that, probably through the AD's office to the students.

Section Prep

As we prepare for the Section meet on Thursday, I will only have the varsity members at practice.  Thanks to all runners for their hard work this season! Enjoy a few days of R & R and then I hope to see ALL on Thursday at the Section Meet cheering your hearts out!  Students will dismiss at 1:25 for a 1:45 departure from school.  The boys run at 3:50 and the girls run at 4:45!! So EXCITING!  Following the awards ceremony, the team will head to VICTORIA'S for supper together.  We will return  home by approximately 8 p.m.

Tomorrow night is a CONCESSIONS STAND NIGHT and I'm looking for help particularly from JV and JR. HIGH as I would prefer our VARSITY ARE GOING HOME EARLY!!!  Please sign up on the form that Mr. Orvis has sent via email so we can plan accordingly. VARSITY, plan to go home early and NOT stay out in the cold watching a football game!!!  I have yet to see the FB team at our meets!! This time it is critical to your success on Thursday! That does mean however, that we need a CLEANUP crew after the game of NON-Varsity members!

Finally, Parents, I am recruiting your help to keep your son or daughter focused on the goal.  Last year was so close for the girls, and this year we are even better! I'm talking boys and girls!  But, your lovelies need to be in bed by 9 - 10 or so every night, and they need hot meals that have protein, carbs and veggies! Also, hydration with electrolytes.  Add lemon or lime to their water, perfect! Finally, if you hear any talk of doubt or worry, remind them, they are opening the door to their competition if they are not thinking STRONG, POSITIVE, COURAGEOUS THOUGHTS ABOUT THEIR PERFORMANCE FOR THE TEAM!  They know what to do, just remind them!

Excitement lies just ahead!  Go Tigers!

P.S.  Reminder that the banquet is on November 13th at BCIS @ 6 p.m.

Thank you Junior Varsity and Junior High!

Last night was the final race of the season for our Junior Varsity runners and we had several Junior High kids that wanted to give the 5k distance a shot @ Conference.  They got their first race, unexpectedly, last week at Austin when they ran only 1 race and so the HVL was a second shot for them.  It was amazing to see several PB efforts that came from this group.  Shawn Husgen is a senior and ran his heart out to a 10th place finish in a PB time of 20:46.2 (-4 sec.); Chase Neubauer, right behind in 11th place with a PB of 21:01(-4); Ethan Flicek dropped a whopping 47 seconds for a PB 23:16.1 and for the girls, Madie Lawrence topped the drop with a 54 second PB in 24:45.2!  Way to go Junior Varsity runners and also thank you to our great junior high and their efforts this season! See you at Sections!

GIRLS 3-Peat as HVL CHAMPS!

The Lady Tigers are 3-Peat Champs in the HVL with strong performances by all but of particular note was Gracie Waltman who had the least amount of "gain" in her time from the previous week. The times on this course were consistently slower for all runners so it was great to see the "least gain" efforts by Gracie!  She did a great job as our number 5 runner keeping us ahead of the closely-packed Lake City Tigers.

Congratulations to Kailee, Abby and Laura, Isabel and Gracie who did a great job and received All-Conference honors!  Scott Boelman ran a fantastic race and was the lone boy who claimed All-Conference Honors placing 17th! Congratulations to all!

Our Boys team achieved their goal of beating PI who was a very close contender that we determined to keep behind us and they did.  In the process they came up just two points behind Rochester Lourdes.  Well done and great team effort by the boys!

Our sights are now set on next week's Section meet which will be held on Thursday at Northern Hills Golf Course in Rochester.  The boys race time is 3:50 and the girls is 4:45.  Following the race we will have supper as a team at Victoria's restaurant in Rochester.  I hope to see a large fan turnout to support the team at this season highlight meet!  It should be a very close race with three teams in our section ranked in the state polls and only 2 advancing!  Stewartville girls are currently ranked 2nd, Winona Cotter 7th and Lake City 8th.  Light the prayer candles!

MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR NOVEMBER 13TH, MONDAY @ BCIS FOR OUR CROSS COUNTRY BANQUET!  STARTING AT 6 P.M. til 8 P.M.!!

These final days are so important to attaining season goals for these fine athletes.  Runners and parents, work together to stay on track with good rest, nutritious meals/snacks and good, positive self-talk when mentally prepping for the Section meet!

Go Tigers!!

One Race For All!

It was a soggy, cold and packed race on Tuesday at Austin.  All ages, genders and teams ran one race together in the rain.  It was a good experience to have to navigate a crowd and also benefited some to have others to run with and pace off of.

The girls came away with the donuts as the prize...another food trophy! The junior high got to experience, for some, their first 5k, and for all, their first 5k together!  They did really well and the future is bright for Tiger CC! This group of junior high has got a lot of talent and enthusiasm, good work ethic and positive attitude which is essential and so enjoyable to coach; thank you!  Our varsity and JV boys and girls had some strong showings despite the weather.  Everyone did a nice job to get ready, warmed-up and to the starting line with minimal notice; good job Tigers!  Great season to the junior high who are now finished with their season unless...

There are several of the boys junior high runners that have indicated they would like to run on the JV and thus extend their season by one meet.  I have spoken to those runners and they will be reporting to practice tomorrow, Thursday, Friday and Monday.  HVL Conference meet is next Tuesday.

For those runners that are done, or as they finish, please carefully wash all your school issued garments and return them in a marked bag with the athlete's name and each item listed with size and number either on the bag or on a piece of paper taped to the bag.  They can begin dropping them off at Coach Miller's room or send them to me at practice.  If things are not returned, the athletic office will be sending out notices of the cost that will need to be paid to offset the loss.  There are several Garmin watches out there that need to be returned as well.  Parents, they are pink or bright green and have Stew CC in marker on them if you could keep your eyes open for them!

Finally, at the Section meet on 10/26, Thursday, all runners are invited to come and cheer on the varsity at the meet and then we go out for a team dinner together.

Go Tigers!
